About the author

Arvi Aleksanteri Karisto was born in Hämeenlinna on August 31, 1879, and died there on May 23, 1958. Before making his name in publishing, he trained as a baker, but reading and writing were already a big part of his life. Sources in Finnish and Swedish agree that he grew his career from humble beginnings and eventually became a leading figure in the book trade.

In 1900, he helped launch the publishing business that became Arvi A. Karisto Oy. Early success came with popular Christmas publications, and after buying out his partner in 1906, he continued building the company under his own name. By the interwar years, the firm had become the third-largest publishing house in Finland.

Karisto is remembered less as a literary author than as a publisher and cultural entrepreneur. His company published both fiction and nonfiction and attracted well-known Finnish writers, helping shape reading culture for generations. The publishing house he founded remained an important name in Finnish books long after his lifetime.
