About the author

Arturo Cancela was an Argentine journalist and writer, born in Buenos Aires on February 25, 1892, and died there on April 26, 1957. He is remembered especially for humorous and satirical prose that captured urban life with intelligence and ease.

He studied at the University of Buenos Aires and later worked as an editor for the newspaper La Nación. Alongside journalism, he built a literary career centered on irony, social commentary, and a distinctly porteño sense of place. Among the works associated with him are Tres relatos porteños, El burro de Maruf, Palabras socráticas a los estudiantes, and Historia funambulesca del profesor Landormy.

Cancela’s writing is often noted for its fine humor and its alert eye for the habits and contradictions of modern life. He also collaborated on several works with Pilar de Lusarreta, his wife and fellow writer, adding another dimension to a career rooted in Argentina’s literary and cultural world.
