About the author

Born in Buenos Aires in 1892, Arturo Cancela was an Argentine writer, journalist, critic, and teacher. Reference works on Argentine literature describe him as a porteño narrator and dramatist, and his work is often remembered for its humor, satire, and close attention to modern city life.

Among his best-known books are Tres relatos porteños (1922), El burro de Maruf (1925), Palabras socráticas a los estudiantes (1928), Film porteño: del diario de Nasute Pedernera (1933), and Historia funambulesca del profesor Landormy (1944). Literary sources note that he also collaborated with Pilar de Lusarreta on several works.

Cancela died in 1957. Though not always placed in the very front rank of internationally known Argentine authors, he continues to attract readers for his elegant comic tone and for the way his stories turn Buenos Aires society into something both funny and revealing.
