About the author

Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1845, he moved to Catalonia as a child and grew deeply tied to its language and culture. He became a leading figure in the Renaixença, the movement that renewed Catalan literature, and built a reputation not only as a playwright but also as a poet and public speaker.

His theater is remembered for mixing romantic intensity with more realistic characters and conflicts. Among his best-known works are Mar i cel, Maria Rosa, and Terra baixa, a play that traveled widely beyond Catalan audiences and helped secure his international reputation.

He remained an important cultural figure throughout his life and was nominated many times for the Nobel Prize in Literature. When he died in Barcelona in 1924, he had already become one of the central names in modern Catalan letters.
