Angel Guimerá

Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1845 and raised from childhood in Catalonia, he became one of the key writers of the Catalan cultural revival known as the Renaixensa. He wrote poetry, gave public speeches, and above all became famous as a playwright whose work combined strong feeling, social conflict, and vivid stage characters.

His best-known plays include Mar i cel, Maria Rosa, and Terra baixa, the last of which became especially influential and was later adapted into other forms. His work helped establish modern Catalan drama and brought Catalan-language theater to a broad audience beyond his own region.

He died in Barcelona in 1924. He was also nominated many times for the Nobel Prize in Literature, a sign of how widely his work was admired in his lifetime, even though he never received the award.
