ZYWILA
In the early 15th‑century lands of Lithuania, a radiant and proud princess named Żywila captures the imagination of all who meet her. Though courtiers and foreign princes press for her hand, she stubbornly refuses to become a pawn in any political marriage, vowing to remain unmarried forever. Secretly, however, her heart belongs to Poraja, a gallant Lithuanian knight whose valor has earned the favor of her father, Prince Koryat.
When Koryat returns from war and discovers his daughter’s hidden affection, his fury erupts into harsh edicts and threats of exile, setting the household on edge. Żywila’s steadfast composure meets her father’s wrath with a mixture of sorrowful humility and quiet defiance, hinting at a deeper struggle between duty and love. The tension builds as both generations grapple with honor, desire, and the looming consequences of rebellion.

1798–1855
A central voice of Polish Romanticism, this poet turned personal longing, exile, and national memory into works that still shape how generations read Polish literature. Best known for Pan Tadeusz and Dziady, he wrote with both lyrical feeling and a strong sense of history.
