YOUTH - A NARRATIVE
By Joseph Conrad
YOUTH
A group of old friends—directors, accountants, lawyers and seasoned mariners—gather around a polished mahogany table, their conversation drifting toward the sea that has shaped each of their lives. In the warm glow of claret glasses, they recall the bond forged by countless voyages, a fellowship that transcends the leisure of yachting and becomes, for many, the very fabric of existence.
The narrator takes us back to his first voyage as a twenty‑year‑old second mate aboard the dilapidated Judea, a rust‑covered cargo ship that feels more like a crumbling cottage than a vessel of wonder. Through vivid detail he paints the ship’s grimy decks, the quirky captain and his weathered crew, and the intoxicating mix of ambition, hardship and simple, heartfelt courage that defines youth at sea. Listeners will feel the pull of the tide and the longing for adventure that still echoes in every sailor’s heart.
