Description

A seasoned language teacher, weary of the endless parade of words, opens the story with a reflective voice that sets both tone and place. He describes the bustling enclave of Little Russia in Geneva, where expatriate Russians gather and chatter in an almost feverish love of language. Through his measured observations we meet Kirylo Sidorovich Razumov—a tall, dark‑haired young man whose handsome yet softened features hint at a deeper complexity. He is portrayed as a quiet listener, easily swayed by argument, whose very presence seems to carry an unspoken weight.

The narrative then turns to Razumov’s own handwritten record, a diary left behind for reasons the author can only guess at. Within its pages lie the fragments of a political conspiracy that has already entangled friends and strangers alike. As the narrator pieces together the entries, the listener is drawn into the tense atmosphere of suspicion, loyalty, and the moral ambiguity that defines the first act of this gripping tale.
