Description

A weather‑worn sea captain finally drops anchor in the bustling port of Toulon after months of perilous sailing, scarce rations and constant threats from English cruisers. The moment he steps ashore, crowds of curious onlookers and uniformed citizens swarm around him, intrigued by the enigmatic prize he has brought back from distant waters. Dressed in a patched uniform that still bears the marks of his long voyages, he presents himself to the authorities, offering a terse account of his daring escape from enemy ships and his desire for a brief respite on familiar shores.

Beyond the bustling quay, the narrative follows his uneasy reintegration into a city still echoed by the recent Revolution. As he navigates the wary eyes of locals and the bureaucratic maze of the port office, his stoic demeanor hints at a life shaped by countless conflicts on the high seas. The novel weaves together the gritty reality of maritime life, the shifting loyalties of post‑revolutionary France, and the lingering mystery of a man who has become a stranger in his own homeland.
