Description

René Fourmy returns to a quiet Scottish glen with a heart full of eager longing, ready to meet the girl he has adored from afar. The opening scenes swirl around his uneasy memories of a father whose sudden disappearance left a lasting shadow, shaping René’s self‑image and his tentative confidence in love. As he waits on a bracken‑covered ledge, he rehearses verses from his cherished poetry anthology, hoping the words will bridge the gap between his inner turmoil and the promised romance.

When she finally arrives, their encounter is a mixture of tenderness and awkwardness, as René tries to hide his embarrassment behind a feigned rapture. Their first kiss feels both magical and fragile, hinting at the delicate balance between youthful hope and the lingering weight of his past. The story unfolds with gentle humor and introspection, inviting listeners to share René’s earnest search for connection amid the lingering echoes of his family’s history.

Gilbert Cannan

1884–1955

A gifted but now less widely known British novelist and dramatist, he wrote vividly about artistic life, modern relationships, and the pressures of his time. His work includes the semi-autobiographical Lawrie Saga, and his strong opposition to the First World War shaped both his public life and his writing.
