CHAPTER IXA NEW DEAL
A searing sun bears down on the barren reaches of Death Valley, where jagged peaks loom like black sentinels and the dry basin swallows anything that wanders into its grip. The trail that cuts across this unforgiving landscape is a ribbon of dust and heat, haunted by the echo of distant pack trains and the sigh of endless sand. In this stark backdrop, a lone rider—strong, restless, and clutching a shard of quartz—pushes forward, his breath a ragged rhythm against the relentless glare.
Exhausted, he collapses in a sand wash, his strength ebbing as night falls and a thin moon casts ghostly light over the dunes. Desperation drives him to kindle a signal fire, the flickering flames a beacon that summons a mysterious boy on a white mule, bearing water and silent aid. Their brief, wordless exchange hints at deeper alliances and the promise of further trials along the trail, where danger, dreamlike encounters, and the harsh desert will continue to test every ounce of his resolve.
