Description

In the wide, wind‑swept reaches of the northern Rockies, a young woman accustomed to city life finds herself married to a hardened Mounted officer. Sylvia carries a university education in criminology and a fierce belief that justice can be tempered with compassion, which puts her at odds with her husband’s uncompromising hunt for outlaws. Their recent quarrel leaves her restless, and despite his warning not to wander alone, she sets out into the pine‑laden valley, hoping the freedom of the wilderness will quiet her conflicted thoughts.

The forest is alive with subtle warnings—chirping kinglets, a startled rabbit, the low call of a moose‑bird—but Sylvia, still learning the language of the woods, brushes them aside. As she pushes deeper, a sudden, violent snap rips her rifle from her hands and a hidden assailant seizes her wrist, leaving her helpless and weaponless. The encounter thrusts her into a fight for survival, forcing her to confront both the raw danger of the frontier and the doubts stirring within her own heart.
