The Barrens stretch beneath a sky that shifts from winter‑blue to a fresh, trembling green as spring awakens the needle‑dense pines and a carpet of magnolia blossoms. A massive sweet‑gum towers over a still, brown‑stained creek, its hollow trunk opening onto a dark, mysterious void high above the ground. From this lofty perch the forest breathes a quiet perfume of pond‑lilies and golden‑club, hinting at hidden life waiting to emerge.
From the hollow slips a tiny, brown‑gray raccoon with bright golden eyes and a ringed tail, the youngest of a cautious, battle‑scarred family. His first venture beyond the safety of the tree ends in a panicked plunge into the creek’s shallow pools, where his frantic splashes summon a swift, maternal rescue. Damp and trembling, the young explorer climbs back into the hollow, already aware that the woods are both wondrous and perilous.
