Description

At a sun‑drenched summer fair in a charming Surrey village, the main street bursts with glittering stalls—bright toys, polished china, ribbons, and a ginger‑bread kiosk that smells of spice. The village green hosts oddities: a mermaid costume, a towering “Norfolk Giant,” a pig‑faced lady, a spotted boy, and a two‑headed calf, all overseen by a breezy stage promising the melodramatic tale of a remorseless baron. Lively music—drums, fifes, penny‑whistles and a foreign hand‑organ—fills the air as children swing from the elm leaves, their laughter mingling with amused locals.

Among the throng two strangers stand out, their unusual dress drawing good‑natured jokes from the village wits, which they return with charm that quickly wins favor. The older, a handsome twenty‑something with a striking auburn mane and a noble, “nose‑in‑the‑air” confidence, wears a sleek black velveteen coat and a quirky mustache, suggesting both refinement and a hint of mystery. Beside him, a younger companion of about seventeen moves with lithe, energetic grace, dark chestnut hair catching sunlight, eyes bright and blue, an allure that hints at adventures yet to unfold.
