In a sun‑drenched Surrey village, the annual fair erupts into a riot of colour and sound. Stalls overflow with toys, glittering crockery and gilded gingerbread, while larger‑than‑life curiosities—the Mermaid, the Norfolk Giant, a pig‑faced lady, and even a two‑headed calf—crowd the village green beneath a towering stage promising a melodramatic spectacle. The air hums with drums, fifes, penny‑whistles and a foreign hand‑organ, all observed by a mischievous monkey perched on a performer’s shoulder.
The crowd is suddenly animated by two strangers whose odd dress draws good‑natured ribbing from the locals. One, a handsome young man in a black velveteen jacket with a striking auburn mop and a proudly elevated nose, exudes confidence and curiosity. His companion, a slightly older, dark‑chested youth with bright blue eyes, balances the pair with a lively, almost boyish energy, hinting that their arrival may set the day’s festivities on an unexpected course.

Best remembered today for unforgettable phrases like "the pen is mightier than the sword" and "It was a dark and stormy night," this Victorian novelist was once one of the most widely read writers in Britain. He paired literary fame with a busy political career, giving his work an unusual mix of melodrama, ambition, and public life.
