Description

In a sun‑dappled Virginia yard, siblings Harry and Kate Loudon sit beneath a towering catalpa, their thoughts turning to Aunt Matilda—a kindly, elderly woman who lives in a modest cabin nearby. Though not blood relatives, the children cherish the afternoons spent sharing fresh fish, sweet potatoes, and hot ash‑cakes while Matilda spins her whimsical tales. The news that the old woman may be sent to an alms‑house shatters their peace, and the pair are determined to find a way to keep her home.

Spurred by his brother’s resolve, Harry vows to earn enough money through hunting, gathering sumac, and any other honest work he can manage, inviting Kate to join his efforts. Their practical skills—Harry’s expert shooting and riding, Kate’s keen mind for numbers—combine with the deep affection they feel for Matilda. As they set off through the woods toward her cabin, the story unfolds with youthful optimism and the quiet challenges of rural life.
