The story opens on a storm‑swept night in 1785, inside the dimly lit, oak‑paneled drawing‑room of Waynflete Hall. A proud squire, his brother the parish vicar, and the visiting gentleman Mr Maxwell sit around a card table, their conversation heavy with old grudges and the looming absence of the squire’s heir, Guy. As the wind howls through the Yorkshire moors and a phantom horse’s clatter seems to echo the past, the brothers cling to prayer and a worn red book, hoping the night will bring their wayward son back before the clock strikes midnight.
Through richly detailed prose the novel paints a portrait of landed gentry wrestling with honor, betrayal, and the weight of family expectations. The tension between duty and personal failure is palpable, and the looming sense of supernatural foreboding adds a gothic edge. Listeners are drawn into a world where the crackling fire and whispered prayers mask deeper, unresolved secrets waiting to surface.
