Description

Helmut returns to Germany aboard a massive overseas steamer, its decks alive with music, bustling crowds, and the smell of coal and salt. The young boy clutches his father’s hand, shouting with joy at the sight of the German flag, while the harbor thrums with workers loading cargo and strangers watching the news of a looming conflict. The arrival scene captures both the excitement of homecoming after eleven years and the uneasy tension as Europe edges toward war.

Soon Helmut discovers that the country he imagined has shifted under the weight of political unrest and military mobilization. His father is called to the fields, the winter cold hardens their lives, and refugees pour through the towns, bringing stories of a dark forest and secretive whispers. As the boy navigates school, new friendships, and the first hints of danger, he must decide what loyalty and courage mean in a world that is changing faster than he can comprehend.
