A self‑taught painter who relies on gut feeling meets Carter, a meticulous draftsman obsessed with the mathematics of perspective. When a lucrative commission for aerial views of a new development lands on their doorstep, the two strike a partnership—Carter handles the precise lines while the narrator adds color, figures and atmosphere. As the work progresses, the studio fills with strings, thumbtacks and spinning disks, evidence of Carter’s relentless experiments to capture the perfect vanishing point.

Carter argues that every line on a canvas hides a deeper, perhaps four‑dimensional reality, and he devotes himself to proving that all vanishing points are interconnected.
