Description

The tale opens in a bustling household where a matriarch‑grandmother presides over the lives of her youth, urging them to follow the strict customs of courtly marriage. At the centre is Ester Larsson, a spirited daughter of a prosperous merchant, whose reputation and restless curiosity clash with the expectations of her family and the looming presence of the local prince. Through lively conversations and whispered plans, the story sketches a vivid picture of late‑nineteenth‑century Vaasa, where social standing, honor, and personal desire intersect.

As the young women navigate lessons in etiquette, secret rides through moonlit woods, and the pressures of arranged unions, they encounter a cast of eccentric relatives, a stern schoolmaster, and a mysterious outsider who promises a glimpse of something beyond their prescribed path. The first act weaves humor, tension, and a subtle critique of the era’s gender norms, inviting listeners to wonder how far Ester will go to carve her own destiny.
