Description

In the shadow‑clad Apennines of early‑nineteenth‑century Italy, a weary wanderer named Bindo seeks refuge with the notorious witch who haunts an ancient ilex forest. Her crumbling cottage, half stone and half gnarl‑twisted timber, swallows the wind as she boasts of controlling storms, rivers and even the dead—yet she admits one power eludes her: the rising star of the young prince Castruccio of Lucca. Their terse exchange sets a tone of restless destiny, where superstition and ambition clash amid moss‑draped stones and the relentless howl of the mountain.

Beyond the forest, the narrative follows Castruccio’s fierce march toward Florence, his reputation for relentless warfare growing with each victory. At the same time, a secretive network of conspirators, including the enigmatic Euthanasia and the fiery Beatrice, begins to stir, their loyalties shifting like the forest’s ever‑green canopy. As political intrigue deepens, the reader is pulled into a world where personal honor, occult whispers, and the looming threat of rebellion intertwine, promising a turbulent path for the Prince and those drawn into his orbit.
