Description

In the turmoil of England’s civil war, a once‑proud manor is left bereft after its lord falls in battle. His four young children—two boys and two girls—are left to fend for themselves, overseen only by a distant aunt who can barely keep the household afloat. Amid shortages, taxes, and the ever‑present threat of marauding soldiers, the children’s world is one of uncertainty and survival.

Enter Jaakko, the stoic forest‑warden of the royal New Forest, who has pledged to protect the orphaned siblings whenever they are in need. Though he prefers the solitude of the woods, he becomes their reluctant guardian, supplying food, shelter, and a steady, if austere, presence. The youngsters, especially the eldest boy Edward, find a rugged freedom in the surrounding wilderness that shapes their resilience and spirit, even as the war rages on beyond the trees.
