Description

In the quiet elegance of Arbitt Lodge, a retired army officer and his gentle wife settle into a world of polished mahogany, silk damask, and glass‑capped cupboards that hold tea sets, chessmen, and whispered memories. Their well‑worn parlour feels both museum and home, a place where the past rests beside the ticking of a newspaper and the soft hum of a fire. Within these walls, their lone grandson Marmaduke learns to wander, his tiny nose inevitably finding the fragrant bowl that always makes everyone sneeze in unison.

The story opens with a delicate tap at the door, hinting at visitors whose presence will stir the orderly rhythm of the household. As the old couple listens for the faint patter of tiny feet, the narrative gently unfolds the tender dynamics of a family clinging to tradition while new, slightly mischievous voices begin to echo through the rooms. The early chapters promise a blend of nostalgic charm and the subtle excitement of change.
