On a spring evening two strangers tread a narrow forest path, the thawing snow leaving wet ruts and bubbling brooks in their wake. One of them, a young man named Samuli, has been appointed teacher for the first time and the other, a more seasoned guide, chats about the remote village of Leppämäki, a place that feels more like a heartland than a town. Their conversation weaves humor and doubt as Samuli wonders whether he can master the long, beautiful speeches expected of a village preacher.
When they finally reach the cluster of houses, they discover a community stitched together by old stories of bears stealing cattle and families bearing names of local wildlife. The villagers greet the newcomers with a mix of curiosity and modest hospitality, offering Samuli a glimpse of daily life that is both simple and poetic. As he listens to the elders recount legends and the younger folk share cautious hopes, Samuli begins to sense that teaching here may mean more than delivering formal lessons—it could become a thread in the fabric of Leppämäki's living folklore.
