Set on the breezy shores of Heinäjärvi, a tiny lake in northern Savonia, the story begins with a clear picture of a village divided among three shallow bays. The modest homes on the Etelälahti side belong to the relatively well‑off families, while the solitary Kivimäki cottage on the higher, pine‑bordered bank remains almost unnoticed. Through neighborly chatter and the savvy trader Nevalainen, a web of land deals, marriages, and old grudges starts to take shape.
On a blustery autumn day two women leave the Hyttilä estate, one with a sleeping child, the other with a heavy bundle, while their husband watches from the window with irritated resignation. Their uneasy departure reveals family strains—a sick child, a contentious marriage, and the lingering influence of an elder who has cared for a brother for ten years. Listeners are invited into the quiet tensions of rural life, where modest hopes and hidden rivalries simmer beneath the surface of early‑twentieth‑century Finnish countryside.

Raised in poverty and largely self-taught, this Finnish writer turned life in rural Northern Savo into vivid fiction. His stories and novels are remembered for their close attention to ordinary people, especially those living on the margins.
