Description

A solitary border‑station clings to the edge of the Wilicza plantations, its once‑splendid walls now draped in winter snow and neglect. The forester Osiecki, a loyal yet impulsive servant of Princess Baratowska, commands a small, restless band of men who are weary of endless waiting and eager for any outlet of their loaded rifles. Their uneasy standstill is shadowed by the distant clash of soldiers beyond the frontier, while the forest itself seems to hold its breath under a bleak, overcast sky.

Into this tense tableau steps the young Countess Morynska, her solemn gaze cutting through the cold. She rebukes Osiecki for drawing dangerous attention to the outpost and demands strict obedience, reminding him of the Princess’s orders and the imminent arrival of Herr Nordeck. The forester’s conflicted reply hints at both resentment and reluctant compliance, leaving the station on the brink of a decision that could reshape its fragile peace.
