Description

A lively salon in 17th‑century Paris opens the tale, where the narrator’s sharp eye catches the arrival of the gaunt Count de Chatellerault. Still bruised by a recent disappointment at court, the count’s melancholy is masked by a theatrical entrance that draws both curiosity and whispered gossip from the assembled guests. The atmosphere crackles with witty repartee, clinking glasses, and the ever‑present tension of a court that rewards ambition and punishes folly.

From this charged opening, the story follows the count’s desperate attempts to regain favor, his penchant for risky wagers, and the tangled webs of loyalty and rivalry that surround him. As the king’s displeasure looms, alliances shift and secret passions flare, pulling the protagonist into a dangerous game of honor, love, and intrigue. Listeners will be swept into a world of dazzling duels, whispered conspiracies, and the relentless pursuit of redemption.
