Two New Pocket Gophers from Wyoming and Colorado - BY - E. RAYMOND HALL AND H. GORDON MONTAGUE
Table 1. Measurements, in Millimeters, of Two Subspecies of Thomomys talpoides.
In the late 1940s a meticulous field study set out to map the subtle differences among pocket gophers living across the high plains of Wyoming and the rugged mountains of Colorado. Using decades‑old museum collections alongside fresh specimens gathered during arduous summer expeditions, the researchers uncovered evidence that the familiar northern pocket gopher hides distinct regional forms. Their careful comparison of skull measurements, fur coloration, and subtle facial features led to the recognition of two previously unnamed subspecies.
The first of these, drawn from the Laramie area, stands out for its medium size, a warm cinnamon‑rufous coat that deepens toward the western range, and a notably elongated snout. Detailed descriptions contrast it with neighboring varieties, highlighting differences in skull breadth, molar length, and ear‑bone structure. Listeners will be drawn into the quiet world of scientific discovery, where every brushstroke of fur and millimeter of bone tells a story of adaptation across the western landscape.

Known from a concise but notable contribution to American mammalogy, this researcher coauthored a study describing new pocket gophers from Wyoming and Colorado. The surviving record suggests a careful field-and-museum scientist whose published work grew out of postwar research at the University of Kansas.
