Description

The story opens with a sweeping hymn to a mighty emperor who has just driven the corsair hordes from the Mediterranean and secured a fragile peace for Christian Europe. From the marble balcony of his citadel he watches the aftermath of the brutal clash at Tunis, where the banners of victory flutter over a field of fallen ships. His thoughts drift to ancient heroes—Hannibal, Charlemagne—and the weight of their legacies presses upon him. In this charged moment, a weary Spanish knight, Alonzo‑Cid, arrives bearing urgent news of a new threat gathering along the coast.

The emperor summons his council, weighing the call to defend the vulnerable shores against the encroaching fleet of Hairaddin, a pirate king whose ambition threatens both land and sea. As alliances are forged and swords are readied, the narrative weaves together personal honor, religious fervor, and the looming clash between empire and rebellion. Listeners are drawn into a vivid tableau of medieval politics, storm‑tossed battles, and the timeless question of how far a ruler will go to protect his people.
