Description

A nine‑month odyssey across the sweeping Sahara unfolds through vivid first‑person narrative, drawing listeners into the stark beauty of sand‑blown dunes, hidden springs, and the remote towns that cling to them. The explorer moves from the bustling ports of Tunis and Tripoli, over rugged mountain passes, and into the heart of Tuareg territories, where trade caravans and desert customs reveal a world far removed from European life. Encounters with nomadic tribes are rendered with respectful detail, highlighting their language, attire, and the rhythms of life that have endured for centuries.

The second half of the journey settles on the oasis cities of Ghadames, Ghat and Mourzuk, each described with an eye for architecture, marketplaces and the solemn observance of Ramadan amid the desert heat. Accompanying plates and wood‑cuts bring the landscape to life—sandstorms, ancient Roman ruins, and the intricate design of desert mosques. Listeners gain both a geographical map and a cultural portrait of a region that was, in the mid‑1840s, still largely uncharted to Western eyes.
