Description

Tom Slade leans against the troop‑room railing, his mind buzzing with the stern yet surprisingly witty words of his scoutmaster, Mr. Ellsworth. Alongside his boisterous pals Roy and Pee‑wee, he’s been tasked with a promise that mixes ordinary chores with a hint of wartime urgency. The evening’s scout meeting ends, but the boys linger on the dim sidewalk, feeling the weight of a nation’s call to ‘do the work which we ought to do.’

Tom wrestles with the idea of joining the army, skeptical of posters and slogans, while his leader urges him to trust the small but vital role scouts can play at home. Through humble tasks—cleaning streets, organizing supplies, and keeping morale high—he begins to see how ordinary hands can bear the colors of patriotism without stepping onto a battlefield. As the first light of tomorrow approaches, Tom’s reluctant promise sets the stage for a summer of growth, camaraderie, and the quiet heroism that defines the home front.
