SUUR-TIURI JA KÄKISALMEN PAJARI.
The story opens on a winding lake route in early spring, where a band of sturdy northern men—warriors, traders, and fur hunters—push their heavily laden boats toward the familiar shores of Tiuri’s castle. Their vessels, reinforced with brass and emblazoned with the ancient Tiuri crest, creak under piles of pelts, tax levies, and other hard‑won goods gathered from the remote forests of Karelia. As the wind fills their sails, the men swap tales of perilous river crossings and winter treks, their laughter masking the longing they feel for the warm hearths waiting at home.
At the heart of their journey lies a complex web of alliances and obligations that bind the northern peoples to the distant courts of Novgorod and the markets of the Baltic coast. The travelers discuss upcoming market festivals, the routine of tribute payments, and the restless anticipation of reuniting with families and lovers left behind. Their conversation hints at a looming confrontation with local authorities, setting the stage for the dramatic events that will follow.
