Deep in the northern Karelian wilderness lies the secluded valley of Louhivaara, a landscape of towering pines, shimmering lakes and endless swamps that stretch toward the distant waters of Lake Koitere. Few roads cross the terrain, and human presence is limited to isolated clearings where ancient forests cling to the hills. The air is filled with the constant murmur of wind through the trees, giving the whole region a timeless, almost sacred atmosphere. Here nature reigns, its rhythms dictating the lives of the few who dwell within its bounds.
In this remote world lives Yrjö Hänninen, a modest tenant farmer who has inherited the ancient duty of forest guardian from generations of his family. From his solitary cottage atop the highest ridge he watches over the endless woods, guided by the lessons of the old forester who taught him to hear the rustle of unseen spirits. His mother, a devout Greek‑Catholic raised among the local Old Believers, upholds strict customs that sometimes clash with the harsh demands of frontier life, adding a quiet tension to Yrjö's otherwise reverent solitude.
