Description

A brooding confession opens this tale, narrated by a man who knows himself only through the shadows of his own deeds. He paints his early years in the familiar glow of schoolroom dreams, aspiring to become an artist and escape the narrow expectations of a respectable guardian. The voice is raw and introspective, stitching together memories of love, loss, and a looming sense of danger that follows him wherever he roams.

When he finally confronts the powerful figure who controls his inheritance—a cold‑blooded businessman with a paper‑knife poised on his desk—the reader feels the tension of a life poised on the brink of ruin. The protagonist’s inner conflict between lofty ambition and the harsh reality of society begins to surface, promising a story where personal truth battles against a world that seems intent on crushing it. Listeners are invited to follow his winding path, wondering whether the fire of his spirit can outshine the darkness that already surrounds him.

Tom Gallon

1866–1914

A popular British storyteller of the late Victorian and Edwardian years, he wrote fast-moving novels and plays filled with plot, drama, and sentiment. Several of his stories later found a second life on screen, showing how widely his fiction once traveled.
