A bustling inn in the Finnish countryside sets the stage for a lively farce, where the everyday concerns of a post‑war village collide with the odd arrival of a theatre instructor from Helsinki. The innkeeper and his outspoken wife banter over salaries, summer holidays and the curious promise of “culture” being delivered to their modest hall, while a nervous local policeman fumbles with regulations and a young, energetic farmhand darts in and out, eager to keep everything running smoothly. Through rapid dialogue and vivid, cramped scenery—a table of writing tools, a bed with woven rugs, a mirror and washing racks—the play captures the humor of ordinary folk thrust into an unexpected rehearsal of community life.
Soon, the promised guest, a charismatic yet bewildered city teacher, is expected to appear, prompting a flurry of preparations, mistaken identities and comedic misunderstandings. As the inn’s residents scramble to meet the newcomer’s needs, the audience gets a taste of the social commentary hidden beneath the jokes: the clash between rural tradition and urban ideas, and the thin line between duty and absurdity. The first act leaves listeners perched on the edge of a chaotic yet warmly human spectacle, eager to see how the characters navigate the tangled web of expectations and laughter.
