A weather‑beaten wanderer rides his irascible burro, Lodestone, back through the Bitter Root passes toward the rough‑and‑ready town of Piperock. The dusty streets and wind‑blown saloons feel both familiar and foreign after months on the trail, and the narrator’s tongue is as dry as the desert sagebrush. He’s drawn by memories of “Magpie” Simpkins, the former partner who now wears the badge and a new, stubborn pride.
Back in the town’s crooked main street, the old friends reunite at Buck Masterson’s saloon, where a scrambled, backwards‑printed newspaper snaps the narrator’s attention. The fresh‑off‑the‑press “Piperock Pilot” is a bewildering mix of Russian‑sounding headlines and sharp criticisms of the town’s morals—its creator, the newly elected sheriff‑publisher, seems eager to stir trouble. As gossip swirls and political rivals eye the ballot, the stage is set for a showdown that could reshape Piperock’s lawless rhythm, while the wanderer wonders whether his return will be a chance to help or a step into fresh dust.

A hugely prolific Western storyteller, he turned cowboys, ranches, and frontier mysteries into brisk, entertaining adventures for magazine readers. Best remembered for Hashknife Hartley and Sleepy Stevens, he helped shape the lively, humorous side of the classic Western.
