Description

A sixteen‑year‑old named Tom Hartley steps off a train in Baltimore with a battered kit‑bag and a fresh sense of independence. He quickly runs into a stranger whose oversized, oddly colored clothing and pale blue eyes set him apart from the ordinary commuters around the station. The two boys end up sharing a cramped railcar on the two‑o’clock “Limited,” where silent rivalry with a schoolmate named Wayne Sortwell lingers beneath the clatter of the tracks. The atmosphere crackles with the hum of early‑20th‑century travel and the uneasy curiosity that follows a newcomer who seems both out of place and purposefully secretive.

As the train rolls onward, Tom’s observations of the stranger’s habits—chewing gum, the way he folds his hands, the careful avoidance of conversation—hint at a deeper story waiting to unfold. The narrative balances the everyday details of teenage life with a subtle undercurrent of mystery, drawing listeners into a world where a simple railway ride can become the start of an unexpected adventure.
