Description

Dick Sumner spends his evenings shuffling lead type in the cramped office of the Russellville Record, the clang of the machines matching the ticking clock on the wall. With only three dollars a week, he is torn between keeping the printer’s trade he loves and the lure of a better‑paying job at the saw‑mill to support his widowed mother and younger sister. The weight of family duty presses on him, making each decision feel like a crossroads.

When the editor asks him to cover the governor’s visit, Dick suddenly finds himself at the threshold of real reporting, a chance to put his pen to work instead of merely feeding the presses. The assignment ignites both pride and anxiety, for it could prove his talent and perhaps change his future. As the night approaches, he must decide whether to seize this opportunity or fall back into the familiar grind.
