Description

On a bright October day the promenade beside Southampton’s sparkling water hums with children, dogs and the idle chatter of holiday‑makers. Amid this genteel bustle, a young woman in a sleek black silk gown and her older, rough‑looking companion—Tom Durham—exchange a uneasy promise. Tom has agreed to leave England, lured by a venture that will take him far beyond the familiar shore, and Ally presses him to honor the faith placed in him.

Their conversation hints at a mysterious “yellow flag,” a symbol of hope or danger that will guide Tom’s fortunes as he prepares for a long voyage to Ceylon. As the scene shifts from seaside leisure to the shadow of upcoming responsibilities, the pair grapple with questions of duty, ambition, and the price of entering a world far from the comforts of home. The story opens a window onto Victorian society and the restless dreams that propel its characters toward uncertain horizons.
