A quiet countryside village is shaken one night when a sudden, golden glare slices through the dark sky over the moor, accompanied by a haunting, harp‑like song that seems to rise from the very air itself. Only a few awake souls—Annie Durgan, the half‑wit Lumpy, and Amory’s mother—catch the fleeting light and the eerie music, each left with a shiver of wonder and dread. The mysterious phenomenon is whispered about in scientific journals, but the people of Sidderford can’t agree whether it is a natural oddity or something far stranger.
Soon after, a massive, black‑winged bird with a mournful, wailing cry swoops down upon a lone traveler, scattering his provisions and sending him scrambling in terror. The villagers watch its shadow glide over the vicarage, then vanish into the hills, leaving them to question what force has entered their lives. As fear and curiosity mingle, the community begins to confront the eerie presence that has arrived with the night’s strange bird.

A pioneer of modern science fiction, this English writer imagined time travel, alien invasion, and invisible men with a mix of adventure and sharp social insight. His stories still feel lively because they pair big ideas with very human fears and hopes.
