IX. HOW MR. HOOPDRIVER WAS HAUNTED
A quiet draper in Putney carries out his routine among bolts of linen and curtains, his polite but rehearsed chatter barely masking a restless curiosity. One August afternoon he catches the eye of a lanky young clerk, whose unassuming manners and the faint gleam of adventure in his gaze hint at something more than ordinary shop talk.
Soon the clerk, Mr. Hoopdriver, finds himself drawn into a new world when a modest bicycle appears on the counter, a novelty promising freedom beyond the walls of the shop. With a modest sum and a daring spirit, he sets off from the bustling streets toward the rolling countryside, eager to test the machine’s promise of speed and independence. Along the way he encounters curious strangers, fleeting romances, and the odd mishap, each episode painting a vivid picture of late‑Victorian life as seen from the saddle of a bicycle.

A pioneer of modern science fiction, this English writer imagined time travel, alien invasion, and invisible men with a mix of adventure and sharp social insight. His stories still feel lively because they pair big ideas with very human fears and hopes.
