A Victorian writer and Anglican clergyman whose books mixed adventure, social concern, and strong moral energy, he is still best known for The Water-Babies and the historical novel Westward Ho!. His life joined the pulpit, public debate, and storytelling in a way that made his work stand out in 19th-century England.
