Description

Tom is a thin‑bodied chimney‑sweep who spends his days crawling through soot‑blacked flues, dodging the lash of a cruel master and dreaming of a future filled with fine clothes, a pipe, and a tavern table of his own. Though his world is grim—hunger, bruises, and endless work—he keeps a restless humor, trading half‑pennies with other street boys and imagining the day he will rise above his lot. This ordinary beginning grounds the story in a vivid, Victorian street scene that feels both harsh and oddly lively.

One careless tumble into a river of sparkling water changes everything, turning Tom into a “water‑baby” who discovers a fantastical underwater kingdom populated by talking fish, graceful fairies, and curious creatures. As he learns to swim, speak with sea‑birds, and navigate this bright, moral‑laden realm, the narrative gently nudges listeners toward reflections on kindness, responsibility, and the wonders hidden beneath everyday hardship. The first act offers a charming mix of realism and enchantment, inviting listeners to wonder what it might be like to trade soot for silver‑shimmered streams.
