Description

Burleigh‑Singleton is a modest seaside resort where the rhythm of life is set by cheap meals, salty breezes and the ever‑present tide of the River Mullet. The town’s narrow lanes, bustling market, and oddly Indian‑flavored cafés give it a quirky charm that feels both sleepy and oddly vibrant. Amidst this backdrop, an elderly, capricious aunt named Mrs Green watches over a modest fortune, while locals gather at the library and the harbor, trading gossip and the occasional fish‑catch story.

Into this world steps Jane Tracy, newly wed to the quiet lieutenant John George Julian Tracy. Their courtship blossomed in a brief three‑week whirlwind, followed by a brief honeymoon of domestic bliss. Now John must return to his posting in Madras, leaving Jane to navigate the uncertainty of his absence and the pull of Mrs Green’s inheritance. Their early marriage, set against the town’s gentle hum, promises a tale of love, duty, and the small dramas that shape everyday lives.
