THE TOWER OF OBLIVION

In a dimly lit basement suite off the Strand, the secretive Lyonnesse Club gathers under the hum of electric lights. There, the narrator watches his old friend Derwent Rose, a striking figure whose ageless appearance and military past hide a deeper unrest. When Rose becomes transfixed by a simple moonlit print, the ordinary scene hints at an unsettling shift.
As the evening unfolds, the club’s members sense that something beyond the surface is stirring—an obsession, a hidden memory, perhaps the first crack in a carefully constructed façade. The narrative follows the narrator’s attempts to understand the change in his friend, weaving together wartime reminiscences, literary ambition, and a looming sense of danger. Listeners are drawn into a tale of intrigue that balances sharp social observation with a creeping mystery, all set against the backdrop of post‑war London.

Best known for eerie, finely crafted ghost stories, this English writer also moved easily through realism, mystery, and historical fiction. His work combines a quiet, observant style with an unsettling sense that everyday life can suddenly turn strange.
