Description

An unassuming country doctor named Paul Pickering finds his routine shattered when a weather‑worn sailor, Job Seal, offers him a spot as steward on the modest steamer Thrush. Lured by the promise of sea air and distant ports, Paul swaps his cramped London practice for a cabin thick with coal dust, setting sail from the Thames toward the sun‑lit Mediterranean.

The voyage quickly becomes more than a simple change of scenery. The ship’s cramped quarters, its grizzled crew, and Seal’s habit of devouring cheap adventure stories create a lively, if gritty, backdrop for a tale that hints at hidden intrigue. As the crew drifts past bustling ports and quiet coves, the promise of a long‑forgotten treasure begins to surface in whispered conversations, drawing Paul into a mystery that feels both personal and larger than the seas themselves.
