Description

When Evelyn Preston steps through the doors of her Washington townhouse, the sweltering September heat seems a small inconvenience compared to the shadows gathering in the quiet hall. A taxi driver drops off her luggage, and the house feels oddly empty—her servants are nowhere to be found. While unpacking, she discovers a torn note from her mother, hinting at a looming confrontation with an angry father. The atmosphere is charged with small mysteries that soon expand beyond a missing piece of correspondence.

Evelyn’s arrival coincides with a series of puzzling events: a chess problem solved with the help of an expert, a cryptic telegram, and whispers of “seditious utterances” that echo through the rooms. As she navigates the unfamiliar layout of the house, she becomes entangled in a web of clues, each pointing to hidden motives and secret alliances. Listeners will be drawn into a cerebral whodunit where every gesture and every missing diagram could tip the balance between innocence and danger.

A Washington, D.C., mystery writer with a sharp eye for politics and suspense, she built many of her stories around crime in the city she knew best. Her books, including several detective series titles, still appeal to readers who enjoy classic puzzles and early American crime fiction.
