Set against the glittering lights of Darpore City and the moon‑lit waters of a jade lake, the story opens with Lord Victor Gilfain and Captain Swinton arriving at a princely palace in India. There they meet Prince Ananda, a charismatic heir who balances the traditions of his heritage with the modern education he received in England. Over sherry and conversation, the visitors learn of the prince’s complex relationship to caste, his plans for his kingdom, and the lingering tension between colonial officials and native royalty.
Beneath the elegant veneer of polite discourse, a subtle game of suspicion unfolds. Swinton, a seasoned officer, senses that Ananda may be hiding more than courtly niceties, while the prince’s remarks hint at deeper political currents and personal loyalties. As the night deepens, the trio’s differing motives begin to surface, setting the stage for a tale of intrigue, cultural clash, and the secrets that bind—or divide—those bound by duty.
