THE TALE OF
In a snug village shop made just the right size for rabbits, a yellow tom-cat named Ginger and a terrier named Pickles sell almost everything from sugar and snuff to galoshes and red spotty handkerchiefs. Their shop is busy every day, and customers arrive in crowds—though rabbits fear Pickles and mice keep a wary eye on Ginger.
The trouble is that Ginger and Pickles offer unlimited credit. Their customers promise to pay later, but the till remains empty while the account book grows longer, filled with unpaid bills for butter, bacon, snuff, and sweets. Even the shopkeepers are reduced to eating their own stock by candle-light after closing.
When the new year brings a troublesome bill for rates and taxes, the partners begin to wonder whether their generous way of doing business can continue. With a nervous terrier, a hungry cat, fanciful customers, and a shop full of comic complications, this charming tale offers a playful look at money, trust, and the perils of never saying no.
