Bruce is jolted awake in the dead of night by a relentless telephone ring, his mind instantly sharp as a wild animal's. Still reeling from his foster father's death and a collapsing estate, he faces a tide of creditors while clinging to the last remnants of his modest savings. The city‑slicked athlete, with his disciplined body and stoic stare, is unaccustomed to such raw, primal urgency.

When a stranger on the other end of the line insists he is speaking to Bruce's son, the call takes a bewildering turn. The voice belongs to Barney Wegin, an old gym‑buddy who has just arrived from the West with news that cannot be explained over the phone. Their brief conversation hints at a hidden danger and a promise that something far larger than debts is about to burst into Bruce's orderly world.
