Description

Tito Gil begins his story as a thin, black‑eyed orphan of a humble shoemaker, thrust into the glittering world of a noble household when the kindly Count of Rionuevo takes him on as a page. Under the Count’s roof he learns to read, write, and even study Latin, while picking up the manners, French phrases, and pastimes of the aristocracy—riding, dancing, fencing, and chess. The brief years of courtly privilege transform him from a shy cobbler’s son into a confident young man who navigates salons and palace corridors with surprising ease.

Amid this newfound elegance, Tito encounters Elena, the beautiful daughter of the aging Duke of Monteclaro. Their playful friendship blossoms into a tender, secret affection, each meeting a blend of youthful games and whispered promises. When the Count suddenly dies and his widow drives Tito out, he is forced to abandon the palace and return to the modest cobbler’s stall he once left behind, carrying with him the ache of a love that now feels both impossible and unforgettable.
