In the summer of 1759 a fresh‑built brig named Friendship is being readied in the bustling port of Whitehaven, and its owner, a shrewd Scottish merchant, is determined to crew it with the finest sailors from the Solway coast. Among the hopefuls is a twelve‑year‑old boy, Jack Paul, whose uncanny skill at handling a tiny fishing yawl in a gale has already earned him a local reputation as a natural seaman. When the merchant approaches Jack’s father, the gardener to the local laird, he offers the boy an apprenticeship that could carry him across the Atlantic to the Virgin Islands and Jamaica.
The story follows Jack’s transition from a village prodigy to a deckhand on a daring trans‑oceanic voyage, set against the backdrop of 18th‑century maritime life and the restless ambitions of a nation at war. As the Friendship prepares to leave English waters, the young sailor must confront the challenges of sea‑borne duty, forge new loyalties, and glimpse the promise of adventure beyond his familiar shores. The early chapters weave together rugged coastal folklore, the harsh realities of shipbuilding, and the first stirrings of a romance that will shape Jack’s destiny.
